Rekha is one of those very few Indian women celebrities whose age barely manages to catch up with them. Even at this age, she shows no signs of slowing down when it comes to hogging the lime-light with her expensive Kanjeevarams Saris, flowery gajras and those (very) filmy jhumkas.
Just couple of days back I watched a news report which basically discussed the differences between Rekha’s awesome role of Umrao Jaan and the re-make of the same movie, this time starring Ashwariya Rai. When they showed movie clips of both the movies, side-by-side I couldn’t help but think that this woman could so easily display those ‘oomph’ characteristics, which Ashwariya Rai could never manage to do even if she won 10 more Mr. World titles.
She is probably the only actress in the history of Indian cinema who has managed to bring in so much variety in her career as an actress. From enacting the role of Shanno (a gullible village girl) in Mr. Natwarlal to sexy seductress, Zohrabai in Muqaddar Ka Sikandar. From a brattish Manju in Khubsoorat to simple, next door kind-da girl called Chandini in Silsila. Not to forget her power-pact roles of a widow in film Baseraa and a revengeful wife in Khoon Bhari Maang. She even made her presence felt in special appearances or item songs in films like Jaanbaz and last years blockbuster Parineeta.
Though her personal life never took-off the way her career did, she still managed to not let it effect her devotion and dedication towards Indian cinema.
Today when her co-actresses are busy resorting to skimpy clothes, overly glamorized lifestyles and countless numbers of plastic surgeries, all just to make their mark in Bollywood, she on the other hand still manages to cast an eternal attraction and stay forever young in the minds and hearts of us, Movie lovers.
So here is wishing the lady many more glorious years ahead with just one request. For Almighty’s sake please STOP referring to (we know who) as Him.
